How We Make Vermont Maple Syrup at HedgeHog Hill Farm
How we make make Vermont maple syrup
A network of tubing runs through select areas of our 250+ acre maple farm.
How we make make Vermont maple syrup
Plastic taps are inserted into holes which have been drilled into the trees.
How we make make Vermont maple syrup
Plastic tubing connected to the spikes leads into a larger line, which ends at the sugar house.
How we make make Vermont maple syrup
The sugar house is where the magic happens - sap is transformed into maple syrup.
How we make make Vermont maple syrup
Hundreds of gallons of sap are collected by means of a pump. The sap is then funneled into large containers.
How we make make Vermont maple syrup
These containers store the sap until it is ready to be transformed.
How we make make Vermont maple syrup
The sap is put through a Reverse Osmosis Machine that removes unwanted water from the sap.
How we make make Vermont maple syrup
The sap is pumped into a secondary storage bin while it waits to be sent to the evaporator.
How we make make Vermont maple syrup
The evaporator is a large, sectioned pan that sits over a firebox and keeps the sap flowing from section to section until it thickens.
How we make make Vermont maple syrup
When the sap gets to the right temperature (219 degrees fahrenheit) it is drained off as maple syrup.
How we make make Vermont maple syrup
While still hot the syrup is bottled and sealed. It takes approximately 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup.
